Melba "Babe" Mattingly

April 23, 1932 — June 22, 2018

Delphia Melba Babe Gress Mattingly, the daughter of Andrew Earl and Ethel Davis Gress was born on April 23, 1932 in Washington, IN and she went home to God on June 22, 2018.  Babe married Wayne Mattingly on April 15th, 1950.  They celebrated 64 years of marriage, before he preceded her in death in January of 2015.

Melba worked with Wayne on the farm, and joined the crew at Loogootee Textile before working at USNAD Crane, until 1974, when they moved to Arbela, MO and purchased The Catfish Place, which they owned and operated until their deaths.

Babe was a hard working woman who always took time from her work to enjoy her family and have a great time with everyone.  She enjoyed having company, family, and friends visiting. She had many hobbies and loved traveling, seeing the world with her friends and family, especially her winters in Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, Cully Gress, Delmar Gress, Rex Gress, Don Gress, Clyde Gress and Gilbert Gress, one sister, Glendora Gress Armes plus 2 great-grandchildren.

Surviving and keeping her memory alive is her sister Velma Gress Wade, her five children: Terry Byers of Arbela, MO, Gale (Stephen) Longworth of Chillicothe, MO, Mark (Janet) Mattingly of Memphis MO, Steven Mattingly of Arbela, MO, Angie (Steve) Chance of Arbela, MO, 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren, plus special friends Gary and Pat Arnold and many others.

Melba's favorite charities were St Jude's Children's Hospital and C.O.P.D. research

A Memorial service was held Monday morning, June 25, 2018, at The Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO at 11 A. M. with an hour visitation before the service.
