Harley Erickson

Harley Nelson Erickson, 89, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away at 8:05 pm Thursday, November 1, 2012, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis.

Harley was born January 3, 1923, in Gorin, Missouri, a son of Franklin Snyder & Ora Howard Erickson. He married Janet Hayes in Memphis on May 23, 1948 in her family home.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in the South Pacific theater with the 390th Jolly Rodgers bombing group from 1944-46.

Harely's true character was most evident through his devotion and love to his wife, Janet, of 64 years, his three children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Those who knew and loved him respected him for his honesty, courage, sense of humor, strength of will, and integrity with which he purposefully lived every single day.

He was an active member in the Gorin Community serving on the Gorin United Methodist Church council and a life long member. Other community roles include a 4-H leader, Gorin school board member, Pleasant Grove Cemetery board member, Sieben & PAG seed corn dealer, and member of the Gorin American Legion Post 498. Harley was a life long grain and livestock farmer; farming not only with his father, but also his son and an affection for all orange tractors. In recent years, Harley was honored to join an Honor Flight to see his memorial in Washington, D.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Floyd W. Erickson, a sister Beulah L. Davis, and grandson, Dan D. DeKraai.

Harley is survived by three children, Lloyd Nelson Erickson and Lois Courtney of Memphis, Connie and Jim Balfour of Quincy, Illinois, and Kathy J. and Tom Albsmeyer of Payson, Illinois; eight grandchildren Lisa R. Balfour of Quincy, Illinois, Shawn and Kathy Erickson of Festus, Missouri, Nikki and Tommy Worstell of Belton, Missouri, Bradley and Annie of Paterson, New Jersey, Laura DeKraai of St. Joseph, Missouri, Erica and James Anders of Quincy, Illinois, Katie and Jon O'Neal of Payson, Illinois, and Julie M. Albsmeyer of St. Louis, Missouri; and ten great grandchildren Dustin, Todd, Quincy, and Schuler Erickson of Fetus, Missouri, Thomas, Jonathan, and Timothy Worstell of Belton, Missouri, Lexie DeKraai of St. Joseph, Missouri, Peyton and Carlie Anders of Quincy, Illinois; and two sisters Vera Monroe and Mildred (Don) Pence of Memphis, Missouri as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
