George Saunders

March 11, 1925 — April 17, 2012

George A. Saunders, 87, of Grenada, Mississippi, known to his extended family as "GG" and "Big Red" to his Coast Guard shipmates, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

A memorial service to celebrate Georges life was held on Sunday, April 22, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Holcomb, Mississippi. The family asked friends to join them for a potluck luncheon to be held at the church immediately following the memorial service. Burial will be in Memphis, Missouri.

Born in Newton, Iowa on March 11, 1925, George joined the United States Coast Guard in 1942 where he retired as commander in 1975, after 33 honorable years of service. He continued a non-military distinguished career in management at Marine Transport Lines where he retired in 1990.

George was preceded in death by his son Gary Saunders.

George is survived by his wife, Peggy J. Hobgood Saunders of Grenada; Children, Mitchell Hanna, Cynthia Hanna, Heidi Hanna,  Chris Hill, Diana Wakefield, and Donald Saunders; three sisters, Edanelle Ekstarnd, Gertrude Saunders, and Kelly Ziemer; lifelong friends Barbara and Gary Johnson; Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
