December 18, 1940 — May 13, 2017

Joe Wheeler, 76, of Memphis, Missouri passed away Saturday morning, May 13, 2017, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis surrounded by his family.

The son of Ray and Bertha Aldridge Wheeler, he was born at home on December 18, 1940 on the family farm in Schuyler County, Missouri,

He grew up in Schuyler County, Missouri where he attended grade school through high school.

He married Donna Northup on July 8, 1961 and to this union three sons were born; Mike, Ronnie and Jimmy. He later married Betty Powell, after going together for several years, on February 6, 2009 and they spent their life together in Memphis going to yard sales, and community activities like the Antique Fair parades, Bingo, listening to the music and taking in the food stands. They were always together enjoying life.

Joe brought a smile to everyone’s face and was known for his employment at Hopkins Lumber Company. He was very fortunate to have been employed for 41 years with the Dannenhauer’s and the entire family was special to him.  He opened up every morning, unlocking and opening the gates, starting the coffee, seeing that the fire was started and attended to all the other duties there including delivering, loading and unloading the trucks that brought the merchandise to sell. He also spent a lot of time repairing windows and always had time to visit with everyone. He was truly a man of character and devotion.

Joe was an outdoors man and loved to spend time with his family and friends and if you ever needed him he was no more than a phone call away.  In his spare time he loved to ride around with his pet, Missy, on his 4 wheeler along with taking the family to camp and go fishing and deer hunting with his sons.

He attended the First Christian Church in Memphis and was baptized in the early 1960s. Joe was an active member there serving as a deacon for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, his brother-in-law, Novle Jones, his nephew, Randy Wheeler and three great-nephews.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife: Betty of the home in Memphis, MO, three sons: Mike Wheeler of Downing, MO, Ronnie (Teresa) Wheeler of Columbia, MO and Jimmy Wheeler of Memphis, MO;  his step-children: Melinda Newcomer of Memphis, MO, Brenda (Dennis) Giberson of Arbela, MO and Rodney (Tina) Sprague of Bowling Green, MO; sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren;   two sisters: Roberta Jones and Kay (Ward) Jones both of Queen City, MO; four brothers: Leon (Linda) Wheeler of Memphis, MO, John (Betty) Wheeler of Memphis, MO, Merel “Doc” Wheeler of Lancaster, MO and Terry (Sheila) Wheeler of Queen City, MO; along with nieces, nephews, and many friends especially his four-legged loyal companion, Missy.
